Whether youre playing songs at a greasy truck stop for 65 bucks and a cheeseburger or youre in a Greyhound bus trucking down to North Carolina to meet some hodgepodge director of a documentary film about children that breast feed until age 10. Chances are youre an independent musician. Sure, making music is great and its loads of fun, but is it reasonable to think that we can actually sustain a living by saying buck you to the man and doing It all on our own? According to Talking Heads frontal David Byrne, its totally plausible.Artists used to need the labels to bankroll their recordings. Most simply didnt have the SSL 5,000 (Mullen) necessary to rent a professional studio and pay an engineer and producer. For many artists -? maybe even most -? this is no longer the case. Now an album can be made on the same laptop you use to check email. According to Ron Gimbals: The recording industry is hemorrhaging financially from declining CD sales and is desperately seeking ways to stop the bleeding. In attempts to recover lost sales, the recording industry has done everything from lawsuits against file-sharers to dropping the prices of CDC. (Gimbals, 2005) In laymans terms, it means that the internet is dipping into these conglomerates sockets and theyre desperately scrambling to try and stop the bleeding. Its no wonder why the popular band Radioed said buck off to major labels and released their record In Rainbows D. I. Y. (do it yourself) At this end of the spectrum, the artist stands to receive the largest percentage of income from sales per unit -? sales of not everyone is as smart as those nerdy Radioed boys. David Byrne opines. (Byrne, 2007) That may sound all peachy keen and loaded with roses and sunshine, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, major labels have been around for years and its clear that theyre to going anywhere. Take a cue from Marina Pallet. After selling 10,000 albums on own, I entered into a new record deal with Warner Pros licensing the album, and I got shot in the marketing arm that only a major label can bring. Suddenly, the same single that I had released to little fanfare (apart from Radio 2, to which I pretty much owe my career) was put on radio playbills everywhere and became a chart hit. Supermarkets started stocking my album. A major label has money, leverage and influence that is simply unavailable to most independents, and that isnt going to change any time pallet, 2011)If you dont believe Marina, take it from the man who signed Elliot Smith, R. E. M. Rod Stewart and my more famous acts, former Reprise and Warner Brothers president: Larry Warmonger. It really is a tough question. Ultimately I think that if youre looking to be an artist with a career, a long term career, for the most part major labels is the Nay to go. (Warmonger, 2006) Most independent labels dont get any radio airplay, so its interesting situation. look you still need radio. The world has not changed that much {et. (Warmonger, 2006).I spoke with 5 different classmates about whether independent musicians could unique and interesting in its own respect. I always find it interesting to listen to the people that havent been absorbed or warped by the entertainment business. The first person I interviewed was Steven Discard. Steven wants to be an actor and plans on going to Albany after D. C. C. When I asked him if independent musicians can survive he told me that through social media and hard work and dedication, musicians can sustain a living while being independent. If you want something bad enough, youre going to put in the effort by going out to local shows, handing out flyers and making a name for yourself (Discard, 2012) The Next interviewee was Dylan Cake. Dylan plans on being a youth minister and in his spare time he edits videos. Dylan perception is what I feel most peoples perception is. l dont think you can plan a retirement being an independent musician. I think that you might be able to sustain yourself for a bit, but eventually without support from the big guys, youre goanna get lost (Cake, 2012) The next person I interviewed was Marimbas Weissmuller.Marimbas a very soft- spoken women who goes to Duchess for liberal arts she Marimbas took this class because she is fascinated by the media and its interaction with society. I feel bad for the independent artists. It has to be a very hard lifestyle working all the time and not seeing any reward. Although I think it can work, theres lots of hard work involved and Most likely my favorite interview was with a gentleman by the name of Daniel oriel. Daniel is the kind of guy that leads by example.Hes a Com student and is into film production. l definitely think independent artists can sustain a living. Independent artists have complete control over their intellectual property. Nobodys getting into their art, nobodys constantly hassling them for money. If they have a good product, ongoing to build their fan base and eventually majors are going to try and grab them up. Like with any industry, If youre talented, people are going to try and use you. Oh so true. (Tortellini, 2012) The final person I talked to was Stephanie Alicia.Stephanie wants to be a writer, but it seems as if shes too afraid to push herself out of fear of failure. If I could do Anteater I wanted, I would choose to be a struggling author all of my life, but chances are, Im going to do a 9-5 instead. Id like to think that independent artists can survive, but I dont think its a comfortable living (Alicia, 2012) My opinion is mixed. Eve been an independent artist and Eve been signed to labels. Both are interesting. On one hand, being independent gives you the freedom and total control of your work.Youre doing everything yourself, you have nobody to answer to, you get no sleep the social networking sites, after awhile it feels as if youre a slave to your art, scratch that, you are. Its your music; its your message; its your life. Add on top of all the financial headaches and bills that go along with managing a business. Being on a major label gives you breathing room. Theres money coming in, were taking care of promoting, they have people running your social networking sites, they have people putting your face in magazines and on all those teeny popper magazines. Theres a business manager, youre Job is to focus on making the hits! Rhea problem is, is that music and art is completely subjective. What do shirt and ties about being on a road, writing a song, bleeding for what you believe in? Most of them Newer in failed bands or never have picked up an instrument before in their life. Its ridiculous sometimes when you actually meet some of the people that work at these labels. How can we fix this problem? Easy, stop having major corporations run the radio stations and dictate to the people what musics played on them.If people cared enough, there could be change. Just like Steel, its only as strong as the hand that wields it. These radio stations are only popular because people listen to them. If people cared they would stand up and fight for their right! I find that sometimes the people have been turning into clear channel zombies. So Ill address this situation again? Can you make a sustainable living being by being an independent artist? Yes, if youre smart, and you dont travel too far, you Our product slowly and secure dedicated fans. Its possible to pay your bills and have a DOD time. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight essays

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight essays In the epic poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the author uses the protagonist, Sir Gawain, to illustrate the heroic ideals of chivalry, loyalty and honesty in fourteenth century England. The poem depicts the fabled society of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It extols and idolizes the virtues of the fabled kingdom. In the poem, Gawain is the epitome of virtue and all that is good. Throughout the poem, however, his character is constantly tested and his integrity is compromised. In the end, Gawain proves that, although he is fallible, he is an honest and chivalrous man of heroic stature. The poem begins on New Year's Eve in Camelot during a huge dinner celebration. The author elaborately details the "feasting and fellowship and carefree mirth" and sets the scene with "fair folk" and "gentle knights". (p. 2) Amid the merriment and festivities of these noble persons, a huge man on horseback dressed entirely in green, gallops into the hall. Arrogantly he issues a challenge to everyone at the feast for someone to come forward and strike him with his axe. To this man, the green knight promises to award his adversary with his beautiful axe on the condition that in a year from then the challenger should also receive the same single blow of the axe in return. Such a challenge baffles the court and no one responds until, finally, King Arthur stands up and accepts the green knight's offer, though claiming it ridiculous. With grandeur and the courteous air of a hero, Sir Gawain stands up and graciously asks to be granted the challenge on behalf of the king. Such a courageous and noble act defines the character of Sir Gawain. With an adept swing of the sword he swiftly beheads the illustrious green knight. Yet, instead of killing him, the green knight picks up his head, tells him to seek out the green chapel and warns him not to shirk from what he has promised, "Sir Gawain, forget not to go as agreed,/ And cea...

Models for EBP Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Models for EBP - Essay Example According to Hulme (2008), the validation process helps in the determination of the credibility of the information obtained from any research carried out. The most essential requirement prior to the development of Stetler model is the compliance to the pre-set rules and regulations governing the organization. This is because these standards boost quality in service delivery and discipline in the sector. In addition, this compliance creates confidence of the stakeholders, in the organization fraternity because of the quality of service in the organization and the involvement of the organization in the assessment of the compliance of the sector to the set standards. Organizations undergo programs tailored at offering proper training in order to have delivery of quality service. Therefore, these programs include the master plan of evaluation in the training. This is because this plan acquaints organizations with the necessary information regarding a firm’s goals. For, instance, it highlights the areas of the faculty that need evaluation. This includes methods to be employed in the evaluation. The kinds of people to participate in the process are anchored in the plan. The action plans required to give feedback on the various inferences made with regard to boosting the quality in organizational service delivery. Language is the Most Important Component of Communication Essay

Language is the Most Important Component of Communication - Essay Example The study of language, known as linguistics, has tried to show how language develops among different communities. This study also tries to understand the factors that contribute to similarities and differences in languages. It is clear from the chapter that language does not only mean the ability to talk. There are many forms of language used by human beings to communicate. Spoken language is the most common among them. Currently, there are about three thousands to six thousands different languages in the world. Linguistic anthropology, a branch of linguistics, majors in the study of structure of language. In this study, anthropologists study patterns of sound, the meaning of words made by these sounds, and how these words are combines to make meaningful sentences. Semantics are also covered in this area. Different people from different locations use different terns to describe similar things and physical phenomena in their environment. However, there are some similarities in some of their classifications for instance relatives. Also another area of concern for anthropologists is the origin of language. There are different models that explain the origin and development of language. For instance, from the behaviorist model, a person acquires and develops language from both negative and positive experiences. In linguistics, specifically historical linguistics, the relationship between different languages is also explored. ... Another field of linguistic anthropology is the study of non-verbal communication. Different communities have different forms of nonverbal communication. However, there are those that are universal. Non-verbal communication uses signs and body language to communicate different messages. This field of linguistics have helped very much especially in the study of sign language which is now being used universally. Yet another modern form of language is coded language which is very specialized. This field is being utilized in the field of science for instance in computers. Question two Language is part of every society’s culture therefore understanding the language of a community helps in understanding of a culture of a society. In studying the similarities, differences and development of languages of different communities, we are able to understand the societies better. For example there are communities that live in different geographic locations but have similar or related langua ges. Through this, we can be able to trace the origin of some communities. In these modern days, globalization has influenced almost all aspects in life language included. By making the world a global village means that there is a need for every person from any part of the world to understand each other. In the early times, communication was the major barrier to globalization. Studies in linguistics made everything easier all over sudden. With development of sign language people could communicate and even do business without necessarily having to talk. Again, development of sign language has helped in communication of people who cannot talk or hear. The study of linguistics is being applied

Improving Business to Business Marketing in TCL Business Research Paper

Improving Business to Business Marketing in TCL Business - Research Paper Example Over the past two years, most small and medium businesses have been badly impacted by the recent economic downturn with TCL not having been spared from the impact. During this period most businesses are cutting costs in order to remain competitive in the business, this grossly affects TCL’s business as its revenue stream is mostly reliant on the marketing budgets that companies set. Over the past year, with reduced business, TCL recorded a drop in revenue by 25%, and the business is increasingly finding it hard to get new business and establish new clients. It is imperative that TCL make a change to its current business to business marketing. In view of this, this business report analyses and addresses various aspects of a business to business marketing that TCL needs to address in order to be able to efficiently meet its objectives. In doing so, the report will focus on how TCL can restructure its marketing mix, how the business networks and relationships impact TCL’s business, how it can rearrange its sales team for effective impact at low cost. With the recession, most of TCL customers are cutting back on their marketing spending. As can be noted from TCL’s product portfolio, TCL gives precedence to offline business marketing using tools such as radio and television for their clients. The very nature of such advertising means being expensive implies that TCL is losing a lot of money in this area. Since TCL also offers other marketing services such as online marketing, it is important for the company to explore its product portfolio and see how it can restructure it well enough for the business that is focused on cost-cutting. Trends in the recession show that more companies which are cutting costs are tending towards online marketing not only because it is cheaper, but because of the reasoning that most end consumers being thrifty during these periods also tend to go online in search of better and cheaper deals (Chlebisova, et al, 2011:1 234-1236). Indeed Court (2009:71) note that key advertising tools that most companies use for advertising and marketing during the recession are the use of the internet, mobile devices and the social networking which are far cheaper and much more effective in a recession-stricken economy. Most companies prefer to use a combination of these with traditional media (Bulearca, & Bulearca, 2010).

Effect of Violent Video Games on Teenager Behaviour

Effect of Violent Video Games on Teenager Behaviour Maria Alejandra Urroz Gaità ¡n Topic: What Effect Does Playing Violent Video Games Has on Teen’s Behavior Introduction: â€Å"No other sector has experienced the same explosive growth as the computer and video game industry. Our creative publishers and talented workforce continue to accelerate advancement and pioneer new products that push boundaries and unlock entertainment experiences. These innovations in turn drive enhanced player connectivity, fuel demand for products, and encourage the progression of an expanding and diversified consumer base.†[1] (Gallagher, Michael D.; President and CEO, Entertainment Software association) One of the major problems society is facing today is the addiction kids are developing towards electronic devices such as television, computer and video games. Parents complain about their kids getting distracted with those machines, start thinking it’s only their son or daughter, and later realize it’s something that most people at school does. Some see it as normal and now it’s common. Violent video games can lead to, from small changes in behavior to in the worst of all cases, killing someone. How are teenagers reacting to playing video games, and does it affect their behavior even if there’s not an addiction developed. Violent video games can’t be that bad, right? Video games have also proven to have health benefits, and psychological benefits. But what are video games? According to the Oxford Dictionary they are: â€Å"(N.) a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a monitor or other display†[2 ]. The engaging aspect of video games is that they allow the player to become whatever he wants to be. The player is able to become their fantasy, and to experience a life he doesn’t have. The video games allow the player become what they are not, this also makes them feel powerful. People are able to express who they truly are; meaning they are free to do anything they please, even if it’s not considered correct. â€Å"Hard fun is, of course, the idea that we take pleasure in accomplishing something difficult: the joy in meeting and mastering a challenge. As a result, when someone is doing something that is hard fun, moment by moment it looks more like work than fun, but the net effect is pleasurable overall.†[3](Williamson Shaffer, David). The harder the video game is the more interesting it turns out to be for the public, the greater demand it has. People like what challenges them, what makes them think outside their comfort zone and look for brighter ideas that they portray through their reactions and solutions to the situations they face. Are there reasons to start playing video games? Teenagers are the ones who tend to play video games in extended periods of time due to their feeling of lacking control of situations in their lives, so they use video games as a way of controlling what will happen. This essay focuses on violent video games, because those are most teen’s preferences. Playing violent video games have shown to have more and faster influence on its players than educative video games have; they have turned out to be more engaging. The former have shown to have both, good and bad, effects; external situations are what define as to whether teens reflect either effect. The violence in video games can be categorized in different aspects, as to whether the characters are representing people or are fantasy characters, violent video games also have different context in the plot of the video games. There are violent video games which present a justified type of violence, or if it’s killing just for pl easure. What is the story based in how does it begins and ends; some video games have no context of that at all and merely show a story, only reckless killings. Through the essay external factors which affect the reaction teens have to those games. How Video Games Begin: Teens are generally introduced to the violent video games by their friends; they consider it the cool thing, since the media has promoted the game as such. Then they constantly play when they are bored, or with friends. Generally they tend to choose to play violent video games because they are a way for a teen to have control over something, which is what teens are mostly looking forward. They are also looking for a distraction, or an activity so that they can have fun. They start playing violent video games, not because they are looking forward to becoming serial killers, but because they are appealing a way by which they feel they can release their anger without actually being violent; because they can be stressed because of different reasons such as school, or a discussion with their parents and getting to do something where they are the ones that control the actions, relaxes them. Addiction: Teens begin playing video games as hobbies, which then become habits and in no time they become addiction. What differentiates hobbies with habits is that hobbies might be performed eventually but habits are constant making them harder to change. Habits are behavioral patterns developed by repeating the action constantly, so that eventually the brain does it automatically. Habits can be controlled or modified, they tend to become addictions when the person begins feeling the necessity of performing the action but addiction requires professional help and motivation for a change. Playing video games has become an addiction in many cases. ‘Addiction’ comes from the action of being addicted to something; which is being physically and mentally dependent on a substance or behavior. Addictions affect interactions within the structures of the brain, such as the anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala, and accumbens[4], such that a person’s motivation switches to those addictive behaviors; it also affects interactions and neurotransmissions between the cortical and hippocampal circuits which are the sides of the brain in which the rewards are stored, and the person begins to constantly perform actions that were normally a reward[5]. In this case video games are played for many hours on a daily bases, instead of being played for fun becomes the main activity in the person’s routine. The addiction causes, behavioral, cognitive and emotional changes. Behavioral changes are the first symptom to be noticeable to others, such as excessive engagement in video games, and narrowing the actions of the day to end up playing. Cognitive changes become obvious to others when the person begins having difficulties because of the addiction, but continues blaming his problems to the addiction. Emotional changes are those such as an increase in anxiety, and increased sensitivity to stress. A person will present certain symptoms when an addiction is being developed such as: preoccupation, time loss, lack of control, making excuses, and defensiveness. The teen starts to show preoccupation as they do daily activities, and he doesn’t enjoy the activities he is doing, he is worried about continuing playing, or thinking about new strategies to use in his game; the teen stops enjoying outdoor, family or any other type of activities, only worrying about his virtual life. Time loss happens when the person has other activities to do but chooses as a priority to continue playing video games, that also shows lack of control and lack of organization; it might be normal for it to happen once or every once in a while but when it happens repeatedly it’s a sign of an addiction. The individual also makes excuses for postponing more important activities, choosing to play video games instead. Making excuses such as those shows the full engagement the teen has with the games and the lack of interest he has with reality; so the teen is becoming less capable of managing his own time, he may be playing ten minutes more, three hours or as long as the teen is able to keep up playing the game. Positive Aspects: â€Å"I find that many professionals simply havent even considered the alternative arguments. They just go with the mainstream studies, or theyre so wrapped up in their own part of the field its not a consideration. I work hard to try to draw comparisons to the things that they love and feel passionate about. We all have those things that are important to us, but stupid to other people. It becomes easier to discuss gaming when I draw those comparisons.[6] Says Dr. Steve Kuniak, he uses violent video games as a way of having a connection with his patients, since he is a player, he understands why they like video games so much. He has found out that video games have the benefit of coping and wellness. Players of video games, especially when they are young, are able to develop their own world and their own personality. Teens also develop the habit of following instructions, and of analyzing situations better. Many psychologists also contradict the theory of teens isolating themselves from the rest of the world; instead they say that teens have the possibility to socialize more through the possibility of interacting with other players that the video games propose. They will also be able to develop coordination and agility skills. Coordination, between hand and eye, in shooting games the character is able to run and shot at once, this requires coordinating the brain’s interpretations and reactions with the player’s movements and thoughts. Research has also shown that players can learn spatial, iconic and visual attention from the skills on video games. In the game the player needs to pay attention to the different situations and the different objects that are on a scene because they might need them later on; the player should be able to notice all those little details as well in the real world. Teens are able to make guesses and test their hypotheses about the different situations presented. They start taking more risks, through those gaining experiences, which in the psychologists’ point of view is good because the consequences they could be having in real life they are experiencing them through a video game. Experiencing the games it’s better than them taking those situations to r eality; it would be dangerous to people. Violent video games also help with team work, especially those online games in which the player is able to create alliances or teams to accomplish a mission. The player learns how to play their role in the team work and how to distribute work. They learn how working as a team can be better than working alone, how it makes things simpler. The player is also able to view situations from a different perspective; they may switch roles and experience harder jobs than theirs. They are realizing how hard accomplishing something, because there are always different obstacles that get in the way. Video games are also a way to release stress, especially for kids who don’t practice sports. It gives them a type to deviate their attention from what could be going wrong in their lives. Video games may have a positive aspect, this also depends on the orientation teens have from parents if parents guide kids in order for them to understand that video games are not reality and that they can’t do all the things they do in video games, like killing someone, teens will react appropriately to violent types of video games because they’ll know to differentiate right from wrong; it may even help them to react to certain situations better. First Changes: The most known change in behavior is an increase in aggressiveness. â€Å"Playing video games may increase aggressive behavior because violent acts are continually repeated throughout the video game. This method of repetition has long been considered an effective teaching method in reinforcing learning patterns.† (Anderson Gentile, 2003) [7] This reaction may not mean that they will be provoking fights, in the weaker of the cases the teen will react harshly to situations, such as a lecture from their parents or an insult from anyone. In a stronger case the teen might react violently to strong situations he or she might be facing. How much is enough? External factors Does it affect the family? in What Ways Did The Nazis Try To Eliminate All Jews I Europe In The Years Of 1941 Onwards?

When the Nazi Party came to power in Germany in January 1933, it began a racial attack on the German Jews. The treatment of the Jews became rapidly worse between 1933 and 1939. Jews had been treated badly in Germany and Europe for hundreds of years. They had been attacked and were treated differently to everyone else. When Hitler started his attack on the Jews it was nothing new, which meant that no one would ever have guessed what was coming next for the Jewish community. In this short essay I will decide what forms of prosecution the Nazis used? And what effects all this had upon the Jews between 1933 and 1939. Hitler wrote an autobiography called ‘Mein Kampf'(my struggle). He wrote about his hatred for the Jews and how much he hated the Government and Jewish polititions for signing the Treaty of Versailles. He thought Germany was being victimized by the treaty. Hitler had very anti-Semitic feelings and plans for the future. Hitler wanted a master race of pure German. In January 1933 Hitler's party came to power. This is where he launched his slow attack on the Jews. He started his campaign on marginalizing the Jews. He did this by random violent attacks of Jews by the SA, e.g the smash Jewish property such as businesses. The Germans hated the Jews because the Jews got all the best jobs such as doctors and lawyers. It gradually got worse. On the 1st April 1933 there was a boycott of Jewish businesses for 1 day. On the 7th April the Jews were banned from some jobs. This was only the start of Hitlers plan for the Jews. The worst was yet to come. From 1933-35 Hitler used propaganda against the Jews. Hitler gave huge public speeches on how much he hated the Jews and what he had planned for them in the future. Hitler portrayed the Jews as ugly, evil money grabbing selfish individuals. He treated them as if they weren't living people but animals or dirt. He didn't just use speeches as his source of getting the word around. He used newspapers, magazines and even school text books! In 1935 two new laws pushed anti Semitism to greater heights (The nuremburg laws). The laws barred Jews from being German citizens and non Jews marrying Jews. By doing this Hitler could start on having a pure race and scrap Jews from German society. Then came The Olympic Games in 1936. Hitler didn't want the other countries to see the height of the anti-Semitism so kept low for a while. He also didn't want countries to boycott the games. Once the games were over Hitler got back to his plans. Over four thousand businesses were confiscated off Jewish business men in 1938. On the 9th November 1938 a man named Dr.Goebbels told the party leader that there had been anti-Jewish rioting. The Fuhrer had decided that such actions were not to be carried out by the parties. The Reich Propaganda Director said that they were not to be seen in public. Jewish school students took a huge hit after the Kristall nacht. The all got expelled from there school. From here on a lot of things were changed in schools. All old text books were scrapped and new anti-Semitism versions were distributed. In the books it described the Jew's as nasty beings. It was all taught as if it was a scientific truth. My conclusion shows that the treatment of the Jews grew beyond marginalization, and further than ever thought by me. The acts of violence were taken too far by the Germans by 1939.

A good planned new town can to the full use and efficaciously utilize the land and can forestall urban conurbation and protect environmentally vulnerable country. For illustration, by supplying sufficient green belt can supply more unfastened infinites for recreational land usage. On the other manus, it can besides advance resources conversation. High denseness development is the characteristic of new town development. High denseness of development favours the public conveyance system. By the debut of environmentally friendly conveyance can decidedly diminish and command air pollution. Besides a good planned public conveyance system can promote occupants to cut down the usage of private auto, consequence in conserving resources cut down dodos fuel ingestion. Furthermore, with a different types of land us within new town, people can run into their demands within new town. They did non necessitate to go to the metropolis Centre. For community installations, as discuss, garden metropolis construct concern about the sufficiency of community installations, infirmaries, constabulary station and fire Stationss, to keep to self-contained community. On the other manus, sufficient community installations can heighten the societal sustainability of new town. The end of garden metropolis is to develop a balanced town in the facet of economic, societal and environment. The proviso of green belt as an border is utile in supplying a high criterion life environment. For the new town in Hong Kong, there are many environment steps to command the air pollution, noise pollution and H2O pollution and supply a better life environment. For the sustainable development, all the environment protections should be done in order to supply a pleasant environment for our following coevals. For the garden metropolis construct, the border of the town is surrounded by a green belt. For the new town, saving of green belt and natural environment are besides the major issue, there are plentifulness of green belt and besides organize an border for some of the new towns. It can supply a pleasant and harmony environment. For the garden metropolis construct, it is suggested that the town should be linked with the railroad web. After the survey of these constructs, the analytical model can be set to measure the sustainability of new town development in Hong Kong.Analytic modelGiven the significance of new town constructs and popularity of new town, in the first portion of the survey, literature reappraisal about sustainability, new town construct and the Principles of New Urbanism will be by and large reviewed. In the 2nd portion of the survey, new town development in Hong Kong will be illustrated under the same model used in the old portion. For put to deathing a utile rating, a full and clear statement of standards is a must. In order to explicate a typical set of rating standards for new town public presentation in Hong Kong, the pertinence of the rating standards will be based on the Principles of New Urbanism, Hong Kong Planning Standards & A ; Guidelines, and the SUSDEV 21 Indexs. By utilizing the three different criterions, the more accurate and convincing rating can be found. In regard of each identified standard, appropriate measuring yardsticks will besides be determined for bespeaking new town public presentation. In the 3rd portion of the survey, the public presentation of the selected instance, Tai Po, will be evaluated. Tai Po New Town will be analyzed in two degrees. They are the major degree and the micro degree. The rating consequences will exemplify the extent of new towns in accomplishing the aims. Last, recommendation will be given to acquire better be aftering to NDAs.STUDY GOALLiterature ReviewPrimary DataSecondary DatasInterviewHKPSGThe Principles of New UrbanismSustainability Indexs( SUSDEV 21 )New Town Planning start from 1970sEvaluation OF CASE STUDY-TAI PO NEW TOWNMarco LevelFORMULATE A SET OF EVALUATION CRITERIASustainabilityNew Town ConceptNew UrbanismRECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONData CollectionSurveyMicro LevelChart 4.1: Flow Chart of Study ApproachEvaluation Criteria and Evaluation IndexsBy and large, the aim of this survey is to reexamine the sustainability of new town development in Tai. Po. After the literature reappraisal on the old new town plan in Hong Kong, I do bel ieve physical planning is the most cardinal portion and give birth to the development of new town. So to transport out a utile research, it is meaningful to transport out a survey chiefly concentrate on the planning issues. In order to transport out meaningful survey, foremost, it is a must to place all the cardinal issues. Second, from the cardinal issues, it should be able to abstract some indexs from the cardinal issues. Third, the standards should be comprehensive, utile and have supportive grounds to demo the direct linkage between the indexs and standards. After the literature reappraisal, I would wish to utilize the measurement theoretical account that set up by Kan ( 2008 ) as a base. The ground that I choose her theoretical account is that her theoretical account is base on the rules of new urbanism. In her theoretical account, she summarizes all the cardinal points from each degree and identifies all the cardinal issues and put indexs to mensurate it. This is rather similar to my preliminary planning, as I would wish to analyze the sustainability in the position of physical planning. Furthermore, in order to transport out a more comprehensive survey, base on Kan ‘s theoretical account, Hong Kong Planning Standards & A ; Guidelines ( HKPSG ) , 2030 Evaluation Criteria, SUSDEV 21 Indicators will function as a mention and criterion to modify some indexs and standards.MARCO LEVELKEY THEMESEVLUATION INDICATORSEvaluation CRITERIAEnvironmental QualityAir Pollution The sum of pollutant should run into the criterion from Environment Protection Department ( EPD )Environmental Friendly Transport MeasuresNumber of Stations Provided At least one station should be provided for each major vicinity in every new town to let 10-minutes walking trip Resident ‘s Satisfaction Towards Fares of Public Transit The higher the occupants ‘ satisfaction towards the menus of public theodolite, the most sustainable it is Time Required to Travel to City Centre The shorter the clip required to go to the metropolis Centre, the more sustainable it isHigh Density DevelopmentDomestic Plot Ratio A maximal domestic secret plan ratio of 5 should be applied for any new town development in Hong Kong Residents ‘ Satisfaction Towards Built Form and Quality of the Environment The higher satisfaction towards built signifier and quality of the environment, the more sustainable it isPreservation of Green BeltAreas that Zoned Under â€Å" Green Belt † Around 25 % to 40 % of the land within a New Town should be zoned for environmental preservation that needs to accomplish environmental sustainabilityProvision of Open SpaceAreas that Zoned Under â€Å" Open Space † Around 10 % to 15 % of the land within a new town should be zoned for recreational and leisure chase that needs to accomplish environmental and societal sustainabilityWell Defined Town Centre and EdgePresence of Town Centre A town Centre that can run into occupants ‘ day-to-day necessities demands should be provided Presence of Edge Manmade barriers and natural barriers should be provided to make a well defined borderTable 4.1 Key Themes, Evaluation Indicators and Criteria at the Marco LevelMICRO LEVELKEY THEMESEVLUATION INDICATORSEvaluation CRITERIAWalkable and Cyclable EnvironmentUser Friendly Cycling Paths and Bicycle Parking Areas The higher the use of bike waies and bike parking countries per hebdomad, the more sustainable it is Connectivity Between Residential Estates and Neighbourhood Centre Presence of uninterrupted prosaic pavements and prosaic crossings Presence of Bridgess and metrosBalanced Mix Of HousingRatio of Population and Housing Mix A 50:50 split between private and public lodging should be adopted to develop a sustainable new townSufficiency of Various Types of Open SpaceTypes and Areas of Open Spaces Provided Green unfastened infinite within residential estates should be providedMix of Activities and ServicesTypes of Activities and Services Offered Social, educational, retail, medical, cultural and transit activities should be provided within the vicinity Residents ‘ Satisfaction Towards Mix of Activities Provided The higher the occupants ‘ satisfaction degree towards the mix of activities the vicinity, the more sustainable it isCompact NeighbourhoodWalk-to Time and Distance to Transit Stations and Major Shopping Centres Walking clip should be within 10 proceedingss to let easy walking Walking distance should be within 1000m to let easy walkingTable 4.2 Key Themes, Evaluation Indicators and Criteria at the Micro LevelMICRO LEVELKEY THEMESEVLUATION INDICATORSEvaluation CRITERIADistinctive Design of Public BuildingsDesign of Public Buildings in Tai Po New Town Creation of landmarkPreservation of Historical HeritageBeing of Preserved Historical Building and Landscape To look at the ranked historic edifices and the declared memorials in Tai Po New townTable 4.3 Key Themes, Evaluation Indicators and Criteria at the Micro LevelJustifications of Selected New TownRecent old ages, there are several paperss or theses related to the rating of first and 3rd coevals of new town. They are normally making the comparing between the first coevals and the 3rd coevals of new town. In no uncertainty, this is good to hold such theses with the end of doing betterment planning in the hereafter. On the other manus, the clip spread between first and 2nd coevals is comparatively short comparison with others, so it finds that the 2nd coevals of new towns is ever being ignored. There is a deficiency of comprehensive theses to mensurate or reexamine the 2nd coevals of new towns. In order to acquire an overall reappraisal of different coevals of new towns, so that it can complement with other bing rating of new town development between the first and the 3rd coevals. Therefore, it is a must to hold a deep rating of the 2nd coevals of new town. Tai Po is the 2nd coevals of new town. Tai PO New Town, covers a development country of about 2898 hectares for current population of 292 600, is the biggest graduated table along the 2nd coevals of new town ( Civil Engineering and Development Department, 2009 ) . The eNotes Blog 12 Female Poets Whove ShapedPoetry

12 Female Poets Whove ShapedPoetry Its important to highlight the extraordinary influence female poets have had on our literary culture. Early codes of feminine behavior did not encourage women to express their personal passions, desires, and reflections through writing. Though women have written poetry for ages, it wasnt until the first wave of the womens movement in the twentieth century that female poets began to use their platform as a way to vocalize their ambitions and address social and political issues. As women continue to speak their truth, we want to shed light on twelve female poets that have had a lasting impact on world literature. image via Poetry Foundation Sylvia Plath Though  Sylvia Plath’s body of work is slender due to the tragic shortness of her life,  her legacy today is enormous. Known for her confessional style of poetry, Plath is a pioneer of her craft. Her work is raw and painfully honest, inspiring countless other artists to showcase vulnerability through their own work. Plath recognized the societal expectations of a 1950’s female and was not afraid to speak out against issues of patriarchy and stifling domesticity. Between her poetry, journals, and an autobiographical novel, Plath illuminates how individual experiences can translate into cultural statements. image via IX Daily Maya Angelou Often referred to as The Peoples Poet,  Maya Angelou is one of the most notable African American women of the twentieth century. Her multifaceted career and unparalleled accomplishments break all boundaries of race, gender, and sexuality. As an integral part of the civil rights movement, Angelou worked closely with both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. She has spoken out about everyday injustice, violence, and oppression, giving rise to so many others who have been silenced by society. With her tremendous influence on generations of Americans, Angelou is a literary treasure who will truly be missed. image via Poetry Foundation Emily Dickinson†¨ One of the most original American poets to have ever picked up a pen, Emily Dickinson wrote hundreds of spare, haunting, and unforgettable poems- most of which were not published until after her death. Instead of traditional rhyme schemes and punctuation, Dickinson used broken meter, idiosyncratic capitalization, and sporadic dashes to convey rich, complex layers of thought and emotion. Though Dickinson was reclusive by nature, her brilliant mind and expansive imagination allowed her confront the greatest of themes:  inevitability of death, the aches of human longing, and the joys of the natural world. image via Historic Ipswich Anne Bradstreet†¨Ã‚   Anne Bradstreet ranks as the first true American poet, man or woman. Having sailed to America aboard the Arbella  in 1630, Bradstreet was among the earliest settlers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She became a chief voice of the great Puritan migration to the New World. Bradstreets poetry explores subjects such as birth, death, her love for her family, and her love for God. Her poetry reflects the deeply unfamiliar landscape of life in the early American colonies. Bradstreet’s poetry provides significant historical insight into the lives of the earliest Puritan settlers and establishes her title as the first poet of the New World. image via Famous Biographies Phillis Wheatley Kidnapped from West Africa and enslaved in Boston, Phillis Wheatley became the first African American- and one of the first women- to publish a book of poetry in the colonies. The family she was sold to taught her how to read, write, and speak English, providing all the necessary tools for a classical education. Wheatley began composing poetry around the age of thirteen and was often called upon by her family to share her work at social gatherings. Her poetry possess strong religious underpinnings, but, like the work of the neoclassical poets of her day, it remains formally controlled and emotionally reserved. Ultimately, Wheatley’s work is amongst the first evidence of writing that reveals race consciousness, which stemmed from her role as a slave in society. image via Poetry Foundation Gwendolyn Brooks Best known for her lyrical style of urban verse, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote poetry that highlights the problems of African American youths in the mid-twentieth century. In 1950, she became the first African American, male or female, to win the Pulitzer Prize. Brooks was one of the champions of the â€Å"black aesthetic,† a movement in the 1960s to promote and encourage black separatism. Throughout her career, she was vocal about issues in her community as well as the national social stigmas associated with being young and black in America. image via WordPress June Jordan†¨ With a commitment to human rights and progressivism, June Jordan emerged as one of the leading political poets of the late sixties. Her poetry is autobiographical, drawing on her pursuit of justice and her search for identity in a culture quick to suppress outspoken individuals. Her work is unapologetic, honest, and deeply reflective of the issues of her era. She often uses vernacular English  to discuss topics of sexuality, racial inequality, and political oppression. In addition to her poetry, she produced several novels, childrens books, and dramatic pieces.   image via Poetry Foundation Dorothy Parker †¨ Outspoken and controversial, Dorothy Parker became a popular twentieth-century writer. As a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table, she was famous for hosting the wittiest of debates and conversations. Her poetry reveals her caustic wit and sharp eye for human foibles. In addition to verse, Parker wrote articles for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker. She moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in screenwriting until she was blacklisted due to possible associations with the Communist Party. A firm believer in civil rights, she bequeathed her literary estate to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. image via Online Indus News Parveen Shakir †¨ Parveen Shakir, the Urdu poet from Pakistan, is considered the best and â€Å"most prominent† modern poet the Urdu language has produced. Shakir is credited as the first female poet to use the word larki (girl) in her works; the male-dominated Urdu poetry scene traditionally used a masculine equivalent when referring to a beloved individual. She often used feminine, first-person pronouns in her poetry, which was unheard-of among her predecessors. Shakir’s soul-stirring, allegorical writing aims to illuminate the female experience in rich Urdu verse. image via Famous Biographies Gertrude Stein Stein captured the dialogue of common people and significantly influenced the writing of post-World War I authors. She had no interest in conforming to the traditional roles of the American woman, so she moved to Paris  and joined the citys American ex-patriate literary community, where she felt she could freely express herself.   An explorer of prose, she broke away from the nineteenth century’s reliance on plot, character, and conventional description to demonstrate how acute awareness and identity could be evoked through simple words. She emphasized the unexpected power of words by arranging them in unusual ways. A true individualist, she refused to confine herself to any genre, much as she did in her personal life. image via Brain Pickings Lucille Clifton†¨ Award-winning novelist and poet Lucille Clifton’s work explores the female and black American experience of the 20th century. Clifton’s lyrical eloquence gracefully translates broad, universal ideals into short poems with simple structures and limited rhyme. Her poems encompass themes of family, the African American experience, and female sensibility. She is playful with her dialect and style, often juxtaposing concepts to create tension and contrast. Though Clifton is hesitant to call herself a poet, her modesty validates the authenticity of her poetic works, which are always inspired by her celebration of life. image via The Baltimore Sun Adrienne Rich †¨ Adrienne Rich’s poetry reflects her lifelong search for identity, as she transitioned from being a traditional wife and mother in the 1950s to being a â€Å"woman-identified† feminist and lesbian. Her poetry is laced with anger, confusion, and a desire to reclaim the ownership of a female voice that has been suppressed by a patriarchal culture. Rich gracefully combined her art with her activism. Her growing consciousness and platform for expression allowed her to branch out, speaking about women’s rights, black power, indigenous rights, and environmental issues. Rich never wanted to confine her writing (or herself) to one style or audience, so she created her own form, syntax, and rhythm that showcased the vivid complexity of her own life and of humanity at large. These women have undoubtedly made their mark on poetry. However, their impact extends far beyond their artistic achievements. In a world that is often quick to silence those who stray from tradition, these twelve women courageously used their voices to create change where it was most needed. Though poetry continues to evolve, the legacies of these women will live on through their words.
